Sexual Harassment, Sensitivity Forum To Be Held

March 7, 2018

Next week the Ministry of Home Affairs will host a series of informative talks on two topics: Sexual Harassment in the Workplace: Men in Power and Sensitivity Towards Sexual Orientation Within the Workplace.

“Various groups have been invited to attend the information sessions through the week, including Bermuda Government Officials, Trade Union leaders, Bermuda business leaders and human rights groups,” the Ministry said.

“The week concludes with a public forum on March 15 at 5:30pm at CedarBridge Academy [Kalmar Richards Conference Room] to discuss both topics. The Ministry of Home Affairs is encouraging members of the public to attend the forum to hear from international guest speaker Ms Minna Salami.

“Ms Salami has a MA in Gender Studies from the University of London and a BA in Political Science from the University of Lund, Sweden as well as an Honorary Fellowship in Writing from the Hong Kong Baptist University.”

The Minister of Home Affairs Walton Brown said, “Employees need to be given the tools to decipher what harassment looks like and the confidence to report it. Likewise, employers and employees need to be educated on what is acceptable and what will not be tolerated within the workplace.

“Ms Salami is more that suited to conduct these vital talks as her knowledge of the main issues, concepts and theories concerning sexual harassment and sexual orientation is in-depth and up to date to the highest standard.

“It is my opinion that Bermuda’s labour legislation needs to be amended to target such harassment and I welcome Ms Salami’s thoughts and insight in this regard.”

I wonder where the Minister of Home Affairs found her.

  2. Cow Polly says:

I hope Ms Salami addresses the following comment by Leah Scott in the House of Assembly earlier this week after stating that she is against SSM:-

“However, what people do with their lives and in their houses is their business. At the end of the day, the LGBTQ community spends money, and they spend big money.”

  3. TO COW POLLY:
Whether BIG money is spent or not is not the issue. Why is it that specific clusters of people always look at that money picture….what about character??
Money..Money..Money.. the driving force behind all evil!!
Minna will provide her knowledgable support for Bermudians. Yes!! Sexual harrassment IS HAPPENING IN THE WORK PLACE..too often…Many who implement the disaster are white collar workers, some are bosses..It will be fantastic to reveal many wolves nicely dressed in sheep’s clothing!!

    • Cow Polly says:

Not really understanding your post addressed to me but I was merely pointing out that our government and opposition ministers need some training regarding their comments about sexual orientation which are both patronizing and discriminatory at best. I sincerely hope that Ms Salami can assist them.
I also agree that sexual harassment is a problem which needs to be addressed and yes, I can say first hand that I have experienced it from business men and women. Me too

it is a white collar worker problem too. It is not only the blue collar worker involved in such distasteful acts.
Thankful that this beautiful woman will be here to provide intelligent and practical information. This craziness must STOP!!

  6. Triangle Drifter says:

Somebody is here to speak on Harassment & look at how many posters make reference to her appearance or poke fun at the name. Very mature.

  7. Claire says:

So glad to see that somebody in power cares. It’s about time.

  8. Zevon says:

Pethaps she could gather a few PLP MPs and go through her talk, particularly the bit about ‘sensitivity toward sexual orientation’. They might end up slightly less ignorant.

    • Double S says:

Aren’t they the Party who condoned and supported their former ;leader’s alleged misogynistic remarks towards a woman of the then Government?

PLP and hypocrisy were mad for each other.

  9. rodeny smith says:

Enough Already . While men are paraded out on the “Red Carpet ” , what color carpet is there for women who commit such crimes ? When is opening a door for a woman considered sexual harassment ? Please , We must let common sense prevail .

    • Mike Hind says:

If you don’t know the difference between opening a door for someone and sexual harassment, then maybe you shouldn’t be around women…
